Matthew is a Partner with McGovern Reid Court Lawyers and provides expert representation in all aspects of criminal defence and road traffic law. He graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Strathclyde before obtaining his Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the same institution, where he also served as President of the Strathclyde Law Society. He is a member of the Law Society of Scotland, the Scottish Young Lawyers’ Association, New Generation Lawyers and the Howard League Scotland.
Matthew served as a non-executive committee member of the Scottish Young Lawyers’ Association between 2019 and 2021 and he is also a founding member of New Generation Lawyers. In 2021 he was appointed to the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland.
In September 2021, Matthew’s impact and ability was recognised by the Scottish Legal Awards and he was awarded a commendation in the category of Rising Star of the Year.
Matthew is a member of the Law Society of Scotland’s influential Criminal Law Committee. In September 2023, he was elected to the committee of the Scottish Solicitors’ Bar Association.
He has a particular interest in road traffic prosecutions and regularly defends clients accused of such crimes. Matthew prides himself on providing clear and straightforward advice to everyone he represents. He works hard to ensure every client receives a first class service from him.
He is a regular contributor to both legal publications and national newspapers about legal issues concerning both the legal profession and the wider public. He has appeared on Times Radio, ITV Borders and BBC Radio Scotland to discuss topical legal issues.
