McGovern Reid are regularly instructed by parents, children and other “relevant persons” in respect of Children’s Referral Hearings which are held at the Sheriff Court.
We understand that sometimes families experience significant difficulties where relationships can become strained and difficult to maintain. It is often during these times that the Children’s Reporter become involved.
There are a number of grounds of referral which may result in the Children’s Reporter instigating proceedings including lack of parental care, evidence that the child is suffering from sexual abuse, the child having a close connection to someone who has carried out domestic abuse, the child has committed a criminal offence, the child is beyond the parent’s control or the child is not attending school.

The Panel is convened to make decision regarding a child’s welfare, and they can impose legally binding decisions including ordering the child to be subject to a Compulsory Supervision Order for a period time and regulating how often the child sees their parents.
It is often the case that the Children’s Reporter becomes aware of families as a result of the social work department.
